If you've been online for as long as five minutes, you'd see that every artist has been releasing new music every other day. I know I am definitely overwhelmed by this insane amount of music, however, I have a few favorites on repeat. I realized that I haven't done a Music of the Month since February (whoops!) and that's a total injustice to the category, so here's one for August.
There's mostly new tracks, with a few oldies that fit the 'low-key' vibe, on this list. Pretty much songs that I don't hear 1,000 times on the radio (*cough* In My Feelings *cough*).
Unfortunately, due to Mercury's retrograde, one of my earbuds broke, resulting in me being subjected to the music around me until I can go home and be in my zone.
I can't really go about my day without listening to Hivemind by The Internet. Every song is quite amazing and definitely has the calming effect that comes with Sunday morning, but also the electricity that Sunday night brings as you prepare for the week ahead of you. My top three on that record has to be: 'Stay the Night', 'Mood' and 'La Di Da'. While 'La Di Da' isn't on this playlist, it's absolutely worth the listen and checking out the video.
Popcaan released his latest album, Forever, where he clearly demonstrates that he will always be unruly. Every track is pleasantly calm - something you can dance to, relax to, drive to - anything. The rest of the world is only now catching up to the beauty of Dancehall, and while they do that, I've been playing: 'Happy Now', 'Wine For Me' and 'Silence' through my one earbud. Oftentimes, Dancehall music gets its own playlist because the sound is so different from other genres, but Forever ties this entire playlist together.
In addition to my unruly king, I have several queens scattered throughout this playlist including Jorja Smith, Amber Mark, H.E.R and Alina Baraz. All of these songs give me the feeling that I'm in the opening scene of a romantic comedy; making a cup of coffee as I water my plants before I sit down to write my goals for the week as Kofi Siriboe enters the shot by kissing my forehead and placing my cup of joe on the table.
Can you tell a pilot script for a series is coming soon?
As I compose my script for an eclectic black-love rom-com, I have a few chill rap and hip hop beats on this playlist including tracks from Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, and Mac Miller playing in the background.
I know. How can all of these genres even sound good on one playlist?
Trust me. Go make your cup of coffee and water your plants with 8|august as the soundtrack to your very own rom-com and let me know what you think.
